Why feeling at home is important.

January 12, 2018

How would you describe that ‘aaaah-feeling’ you get when you get home from a long day at work? I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I haven’t come up with anything better than ‘pretty f*cking amazing’. It seems that the older we get the more intense this ‘aaaah-feeling’ becomes. But why is that? Why do we enjoy coming home so much?

Truth bomb: adult life is exhausting.

In high school and college, it was all fun and games. Sure, buying booze with a fake ID was stressful. But you’re an adult now. You have bills to pay, a house to maintain and maybe even children to raise. And then there is this thing called ‘a career’ that takes up most of your time. No wonder you feel the need to relax.

Being able to relax in your

own home is important

if you want to stay

energetic, healthy and focused.

Most people spend their time at home when they are not at work. That makes your home the perfect place to relax, don’t you think? Transforming your house into a home you enjoy spending time in, is very important if you want to stay energetic, healthy and focused. Here’s why:

  • Relaxing reduces your stress levels and the chance of a burn out.

  • Relaxing boosts your immune system.

  • Relaxing has an immediate positive effect on your energy levels and productivity.

Pretty important stuff if you ask me. Maybe you want to start thinking about how you can turn your house into a super comfy crib?

We often identify ourselves

and others with the way

our house looks.

Another big reason why this ‘feeling at home’ stuff is important is because we often identify ourselves and others with the way our house looks. Think about it. We feel proud if our house looks exactly the way we like it. We feel like we know a person better when we’ve visited their home. People often enjoy tasks that makes their homes look good like decorating or gardening. We also know that neglecting your home it is often a sign of a troubled mind.

This makes you think, right?

What if I'm an expat?

Building a home that works for you is a bit harder when you move around a lot but it’s also crucial if you want to stay energetic, productive and focused. Moving to a different country every couple of years while staying productive and focused at work takes up a lot of that energy. Investing in your own health by creating a comfortable and enjoyable apartment doesn’t sound like a bad idea, don’t you think?

So. Look around in your house right now and ask yourself these three questions:

  • Do I enjoy spending time here?

  • Do I feel comfortable?

  • Do I like coming home here?

You do? Good! You've done an excellent job in creating a home away from home.

You don’t? That’s okay. Together we can turn your house into your home. I know just how to figure out what your style is and I know all the great interior labels that The Netherlands has to offer. And I’m not afraid to share. Just send me an email at: marlies@expathome.nl and I'll come visit.

See you soon?
